Albert Coates
Albert Coates (born 1882) was an inspiring conductor for whom orchestras gave of their very best.
He was born and raised in St. Petersburg, and after completing his formal education at Liverpool University, studied under Arthur Nikisch at Leipzig, like his contemporary Adrian Boult.
He worked in Russia until 1919, returning to Britain and striking up a fruitful relationship with the London Symphony Orchestra, recording, mostly for HMV, until the mid 1930's.
After a spell in the USA, he returned to Britain to make a few records for Decca at the end of the Second World War, before settling in South Africa, where he died in 1953. His many recordings, mainly of Russian music and of Wagner, are bringing his artistry to new generations.
