Walter Gieseking (1895-1956)
Walter Gieseking (1895-1956) was a well-known figure in British musical life from the 1920's until his untimely death, and many of his recordings were made in London, where he seemed to feel at home.
These include classic recordings of piano music by Debussy, Ravel, Grieg, Schubert, Schumann, Mozart and Brahms. He was working on a Beethoven sonata cycle at the time of his death.
His repertoire was very wide and he could learn new pieces with ease. He focused more on the overall sense of each piece, rather than on detail, and his faster tempi sometimes resulted in inaccuracies.
