Selmar Meyrowitz was born in 1875.
A series of appointments in various opera houses culminated in a spell at the Berlin State Opera (1924 to 1933), after which the advent of Fascism forced him to flee to Paris. Here he made a series of distinguished recordings for Pathe-Columbia, but in 1940 he was forced into hiding during the Nazi occupation of France.
The exact circumstances of his death are not clear, some sources stating he died in Paris, others in Toulouse, in March 1941.
