Reviews of Historic Recordings releases by Gary Lemco
Tchaikovsky / Landon Ronald 0005
From the first statement of Tchaikovsky’s theme from Op. 55 (3 December 1929), the easy sway and melodic contour of the entire set of twelve variations presents itself to us, the consistent crackle in the original shellacs quickly relegated to white noise.
Blistering attacks in the trumpets and French horns, excellent phraseology from the strings and clarinets, all conspire to quite sweep away the years of this resuscitated performance, a revelation on its own terms.
Manfred Sevitzky 0017
A new label devoted to historic recordings is always welcome to these pages, and so I wanted to audition the Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony (27 January 1942) by Fabien Sevitzky (1893-1967), nephew of his more famous uncle, Serge Koussevitzky.
....to acquire engineer Damian Rogan’s transfer of the Manfred Symphony comes as a pleasant surprise
....the old shellacs sound fairly impressive in their new format.
....the side breaks are seamless. Some hiss and swish still infiltrate the surface sound, but the sonic definition is good, given the limits of RCA's microphone placement.
....this Tchaikovsky Manfred is a keeper.
Goossens in Sydney 0018
The performances here restored by Damian Rogan, taken from HMV masters, date from the month of April 1952, the Beethoven (21-22 April) and the Mendelssohn (9 April) fondly remembered--and coveted--as classical LPs. That Historic-Recordings give us the elusive Danse Macabre (10 April) makes this restoration even more valuable.
An important restoration
Budapest Qrt 003
The Budapest Quartet (founded 1917)--old guard and relatively new--find rare and fascinating representation on this fine addition from Britain’s Historic Recordings label, the restorations by Bryan Bishop.
