George Weldon (1908-1963)
George Weldon (1908-1963) came to prominence in 1943 when he was appointed conductor of the City of Birmingham Orchestra in succession to Leslie Heward. After seven years, he left, possibly as a result of rumours about his relationship with a married colleague.
In 1952, Barbiroli invited him to Manchester as Assistant Conductor with the Halle. He also made a series of recordings with various London orchestras, including two versions of Elgar's Sea Pictures with Gladys Ripley, the Enigma Variations & In the South.
