Beginning his career as a cellist, Schneevoigt succeded Robert Kajanus as conductor of the Finnish National Orchestra in 1932. Kajanus had founded the orchestra (as the Helsinki Philharmonic), conducting it for 50 years, and was noted for his interpretations of the music of Finland's greatest composer, Sibelius.
Schnnevoigt followed in this tradition, being noted for a more relaxed approach that Kajanus had evidenced, for example in the latter's recordings of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th Symphonies. Schneevoigt's personal connections with Sibelius make his recordings of the 4th and 6th Symphonies especially valuable.
