A major project...
...will be the abridged recording of Wagner's "Ring" cycle made by HMV using the acoustic process. Approximately 3 hours of extracts were recorded in a piecemeal fashion, using various conductors (Coates, Landon Ronald, Pitt and Goossens) and singers (Florence Easton, Tudor Davies, Robert Radford). However, these discs allowed the listener to hear only about one fifth of the whole cycle in the comfort of their own home. With the coming of electrical recording in 1925, HMV began re-recording a much larger selection of excerpts (now available as a 7-CD set from Pearl), while deleting the acoustic recordings, which have as a result become collector's items.
